Merti Sub-County Police Commander Moses Kirong told The Eastleigh Voice that the criminals fired thrice at the vehicle, killing the student on the spot.
The St. Paul's Kiwanjani Secondary School student was seated next to the driver.
"We are hunting down the criminals while investigating the motive of the attack," Kirong said.
Local leaders and residents asked the government to secure the stretch to prevent similar incidents.
County Parents Association Chairperson Ismael Galma condoled with the girl's family and asked security agencies to expedite the probe and the arrest of the criminals.
"It is so sad that we lost such a young girl to banditry, which remains a huge impediment to development in our region," he said.
The burial is scheduled for Tuesday in Merti.
